  4. The "Files Section" of SPITFIRE allows users to transfer files between
  5. their system and SPITFIRE.  Downloading is the process of moving files
  6. from SPITFIRE to your computer and uploading is moving files from your
  7. computer to SPITFIRE.
  8.  
  9. File transfers can be done in a number of ways in SPITFIRE.  New error
  10. checking protocols are being added on a regular basis, but the most common
  11. transfer method is XMODEM. XMODEM protocol was originally developed by
  12. Ward Christensen, a pioneer in micro communications.  XMODEM is included
  13. in most communications programs.  Before talking any more about specific
  14. protocols, lets review the general method of locating a file or program
  15. to download in a SPITFIRE system.

  17. The explanation which follows assumes the SYSOP has adopted the standard
  18. SPITFIRE FILES MENU and is using the recommended prompts. Since SPITFIRE
  19. allows the option of changing the wording on each MENU, you may find some
  20. slight variation of the menu prompts which will perform the same functions.
  21.  
  22. SPITFIRE allows storing files in different file areas, each of which is
  23. devoted to different types of files or programs. The status line
  24. directly above the Files Menu Prompt tells you which File Area is active.
  25. File areas usually have names like GAMES, UTILITIES, etc., and likewise
  26. contain that type of files. To list the specific programs available
  27. IN THE CURRENT FILE AREA, select the "<L>... List Files In This Area" command.
  28. The complete names of the files will be listed along with file size, file date
  29. and a short description of each file.

  31. After reviewing the files in the CURRENT FILE AREA, you may change to
  32. another area using the <C>... Change File Area command.  Pressing C
  33. will bring up a prompt asking which file area you wish to change to. If you
  34. are familiar with the particular system you are calling you can enter the
  35. NUMBER corresponding to the area you want. If you don't know the areas
  36. available you may simply press <ENTER> or carriage return for a complete
  37. list. After indicating the change you wish to make you may again use the
  38. <L>... List Files In This Area command to display the files available in
  39. the new area.

  41. XMODEM FILE TRANSFER
  42.  
  43. SPITFIRE supports three variations of the XMODEM protocol called XMODEM,
  44. XMODEM/CRC and 1K-MODEM . One of these three protocols is required if you
  45. intend to transfer files with extensions of EXE, OBJ, COM, ARC, LBR, etc.
  46. Files containing the IBM PC special ASCII characters (ones with ASCII values
  47. above 128) must also be transferred with XMODEM, including Wordstar files.
  48. These files cannot be transferred in ASCII mode since ASCII transfer is only
  49. 7 bit and these types of files require the full 8 bit transfer of the data
  50. with no translation of the contents of the file.

  52. XMODEM also offers the advantage of error checking on a block by block basis
  53. to assure that the data sent contains no errors. It does this by adding a
  54. checksum byte to the end of each block of data; the receiver calculates its
  55. own checksum and compares it to the one received. If an error is detected in
  56. the transmission, XMODEM will request that SPITFIRE retransmit the block of
  57. data.

  59. DOWNLOADS ONLY...
  60. SPITFIRE also supports YMODEM BATCH, YMODEM-g BATCH and SEAlink BATCH for 
  61. downloads but not on uploads.  Watch for the next release of SPITFIRE, it 
  62. will contain these protocols on uploads.  The YMODEM-g protocols are only 
  63. available if the system you are calling uses an error checking modem and 
  64. if you are calling with an error checking modem.  However, the YMODEM BATCH 
  65. and SEAlink BATCH is available to all callers.  YMODEM BATCH and SEAlink 
  66. BATCH allows you to load a Batch Queue with a series of files and then 
  67. perform a continuous download.

  69. To download a file, you will follow the below listed procedure...
  70.  
  71. 1. Select <D>... Download from the FILES MENU
  72.  
  73. 2. Select the transfer protocol you want to use by entering the number which
  74.    corresponds to it, (i.e. <3> for XMODEM/CRC.
  75.  
  76. 3. Enter the COMPLETE file name. SPITFIRE will notify you if the file you
  77.    selected is not available to download.
  78.  
  79. 4. SPITFIRE will indicate how many blocks are to be sent and the approximate
  80.    time it will take to download the file.  You then have 45 seconds to 
  81.    start the download.

  83. 5. The file will be transferred automatically block by block under XMODEM
  84.    until the entire file has been sent. You may abnormally abort the
  85.    transfer by sending SPITFIRE an ASCII CAN code (CTRL-X).

  87. 6. Please be certain to select and use matching protocol types for accurate
  88.    data interchange.

  90. FILE UPLOADING
  91.  
  92. File uploading to SPITFIRE is very similar to downloading.
  93.  
  94. Before sending a file be sure SPITFIRE has enough disk space to take the file.
  95. When you select <U>PLOAD at the File menu, the system will tell you
  96. how much disk space is free on the upload drive.

  100. You are encouraged to donate programs to this system. Any type of program or
  101. document is welcome, however, a few ground rules are in order. The files
  102. donated must be in the public domain or Shareware.  No commercial programs
  103. should be placed on this system. The SYSOP is not responsible for any of the
  104. data that is shared on this system.
